Frequently Asked Questions – Your Kitchen Questions Answered

Everything you wanted to know about kitchen tools, buying guides, and our review process.

We get a LOT of questions. Instead of answering the same things over and over, we put together this FAQ. If your question isn’t here, email us and we’ll add it!

🎂 KitchenAid Stand Mixer FAQs

Q: Is a KitchenAid mixer worth the money?

A: If you bake 2+ times per month, absolutely. These mixers last 20+ years, which works out to like $25/year. Compare that to hand-mixing fatigue or cheap mixers that break in 2 years.

Q: Which KitchenAid model should I buy?

A: Depends what you make:

  • Mini (3.5-qt): Occasional baker, small kitchen
  • Artisan (5-qt): Regular home baker (most popular)
  • Professional (7-qt): Bread baker, large batches

Q: Can I make bread dough with the Artisan?

A: Yes! The Artisan handles most bread doughs fine. Only super thick dough (like bagels) might struggle. For heavy bread baking 2-3x per week, get the Professional.

Q: What’s the difference between tilt-head and bowl-lift?

A: Tilt-head (Artisan, Mini) = head tilts back for easy bowl access. Bowl-lift (Professional) = bowl lifts up, more stable for heavy dough. For most home baking, tilt-head is fine.

Q: Are KitchenAid attachments worth it?

A: The good ones, yes:

  • Pasta roller: Fresh pasta is amazing
  • Ice cream maker: Homemade ice cream for $2/pint
  • Food grinder: Fresh ground meat = better burgers
  • Spiralizer: Cool but you’ll use it 3 times then forget about it

🍲 Instant Pot FAQs

Q: Is the Instant Pot just hype?

A: No! Its legitimately useful. We use ours 3-4x per week. Chicken from frozen in 25 minutes? Rice that’s perfect every time? Yes please.

Q: Which Instant Pot should I buy?

A: Duo 6-quart for most families. Its the best value and does everything you need. Check current price →

Q: Is the Instant Pot scary/dangerous?

A: Not at all. It has like 10 safety features. The first few uses feel intimidating, but after that its super easy. Just follow recipes exactly until you get comfortable.

Q: Can I use my old pressure cooker recipes?

A: Yes, but reduce cooking time by about 10-15%. Instant Pot heats up faster than stove-top pressure cookers.

🍳 Cast Iron FAQs

Q: Is cast iron hard to maintain?

A: No! Heres the routine: rinse with hot water, scrub with brush (no soap!), dry immediately, rub with tiny bit of oil. Takes 2 minutes.

Q: Can I use soap on cast iron?

A: Modern dish soap is fine occasionally, but hot water + scrubbing is usually enough. The “no soap ever” rule is outdated.

Q: My cast iron is rusty, is it ruined?

A: Nope! Scrub off the rust, re-season it, and its good as new. Cast iron is virtually indestructible.

Q: Lodge vs Le Creuset – whats the difference?

A: Lodge is raw cast iron ($25). Le Creuset is enameled ($300+). For skillets, Lodge performs just as well. For dutch ovens, Le Creuset’s enamel is nice but not essential.

☕ Espresso Machine FAQs

Q: Can I make good espresso at home?

A: Yes! With a decent machine (like Breville Barista Express) and fresh beans, you can make cafe-quality espresso. Theres a learning curve though – expect your first 10-20 shots to be mediocre.

Q: Do I need to buy an expensive grinder?

A: The Breville Barista Express has a built-in grinder thats pretty good. If you already have a machine without grinder, spend at least $100 on a burr grinder.

Q: How much does it cost per shot?

A: About $0.50-0.70 per shot (if you buy decent beans). Compare that to $3-5 at coffee shops. Machine pays for itself in 6 months if you drink coffee daily.

📝 About Our Reviews

Q: Do you really test these products?

A: Yes! We buy most products ourselves and test them for weeks/months before writing reviews. Sometimes brands send products, but we still test honestly and return if they suck.

A: Running this site costs money (hosting, buying products to test, time). Affiliate links let us earn small commissions when you buy, which keeps the site free for you. Full disclosure here.

Q: Do affiliate links make your reviews biased?

A: We try hard not to be. We’ve returned products and written negative reviews even though it cost us commission. Your trust is more valuable than any commission.

Q: How often do you update your guides?

A: We check prices and availability monthly. When new models come out, we test them and update guides. All guides show “Last Updated” date at the top.

A: Yes! Email us your request. We keep a list and try to test popular requests. No guarantees though – some products are too expensive or hard to find.

🔧 Troubleshooting FAQs

Q: My KitchenAid mixer stopped working. Help!

A: Check our troubleshooting guide. Common fixes: reset breaker, check if head is locked, inspect worm gear. 80% of “broken” mixers just need simple fixes.

Q: My Instant Pot says “Burn” – is it broken?

A: Not broken! “Burn” message means theres not enough liquid or something stuck to bottom. Add more liquid, deglaze the pot, try again.

Q: My cast iron is sticky, whats wrong?

A: Too much oil when seasoning. Scrub it off, re-season with VERY thin layer of oil. Less is more!
